Finding your way

Lisbon rises over hills on the Tagus estuary. The flat, grid-planned Baixa was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake; Alfama and Bairro Alto sit on the heights, and Belém lies west of the centre.

Getting around

The metro has four lines (blue, yellow, green and red). Carris runs the trams, the funiculars and the Santa Justa Lift. The limestone paving (calçada portuguesa) gets slippery in the rain.

Getting there

Humberto Delgado Airport is linked to the centre by the metro’s red line.

Emergencies

European emergency number: 112.
